Programs
Lift Every Voice
Community organizing project using volunteers to eradicate hunger and poverty in Grant County
Community Food Pantry
Community Food Pantry Project.
Distribution on the first Saturday, 10am-noon and last Wednesday, 4 – 6pm every month
Community Garden projects in Mining District, Silver City, working on Mimbres, Cliff/Gila and Pickle Bucket Gardening™ in elementary and middle schools in Grant County. Grow a Rowgarden program to share with those in need
Economic Development/Local Sustainability projects including thrift store to support hunger work, social enterprise training, Farm to Cafeteria, farmers markets. Education projects including permaculture principles, gardening, composting, food preservation, gardening in small spaces, local sustainability. Gleaning and Food Recovery
The Commons Center for Food Security and Sustainability
The purpose of The Commons, 13th and Corbin, Silver City, is twofold: first, to meet the immediate needs of county residents that don't get enough to eat and second, to build community around the concepts of food justice, local self-sufficiency and sustainability. The Commons will provide emergency food distribution, indoor and outdoor teaching space, community gardens, greenhouses, commercial kitchen, retail space and serve as demonstration sites for permaculture principles, water catchment, solar and green building, culturally and geographically appropriate food and herb growing, seed saving and plant starts, social enterprise and sustainable economic development.

Companionship Program for homebound seniors. Currently we have:
  • 22 matched recipients.
  • 10 occasional need recipients.
  • 7 unmatched seniors.
  • 2-6 referrals/wk
Alimento para el Niño
Weekend backpack program for kids that don’t get enough to eat
  • 225 children in Silver Consolidated Schools.
  • 110 Children in Cobre Consolidated Schools.
  • 2000 backpacks in 2010
Intergenerational Summer Lunch Program
  • Provides summer backpacks for kids in conjunction with the existing summer lunch program
  • Youth/Senior Gardening Projects
  • Provided 1000 backpacks to kids in Grant County summer 2008
Miel de mi Corazón

125 $250 grants distributed to single female head of household in 3.5 years. Recipients range from infants to elders, baby formula to porch painting, and lots of utilities and rent in between.

Community Wide Service Learning Initiative (CWSLI)

Partnership between The Volunteer Center and Western New Mexico University to bring service learning to Grant County classrooms from K-HE.

IDA (Individual Deposit Account) Program

Administer 4:1 matched savings program through New Mexico Community Assets Coalition for low-income people to open small businesses, pay college tuition or buy a home. Twenty people have graduated from program since Jan 2008.
