Help us pack food boxes for delivery to our homebound neighbors! This activity requires walking, standing, and lifting. 

The Commons is looking for volunteers to help deliver food boxes to Jose Barrios Elementary and Stout Elementary School. These boxes are part of our Alimento Program, which provides food and snacks to students and families in our community who need food assistance.

Qualifications

Must have a valid driver's license and be able to lift 25lbs to volunteer.

Help us break down cardboard and take excess trash and other debris to the dump for proper disposal!

The Common’s seeks to maximize the growth of edible, medicinal and beneficial plants on its premises.  Assist with raised beds, greenhouse projects, fruit trees and other garden tasks as directed.  Assist with compost initiatives. Learn a wide variety of gardening techniques for community benefit.

July 4th 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Please come and be a part of the Silver City Museum's Ice Cream Social. The Ice Cream Social started in 1977 and initially happened every other year. Since the humble beginnings of the Silver City Museum, to today, the ICS is an integral part of Silver City's Independence Day and we celebrate our 42nd this year!

We need a large variety of volunteers inside and outside of the museum; Kids activities, face painters, store cashiers, store watchers, greeter desk, set up and break down, grill masters, ice cream scooper, ticket takers and ticket sales, and decorating. Help us make this 4th of July memorable and fun. Please sign up today!

Dinner Hours: 5:00—7:00 PM

We usually are able to serve dinner and clean everything up by 7:00 PM, but sometimes clean up can run until 7:30 PM at the very latest. If you need to leave earlier that is fine!

Volunteer Grant Writers support the organization by researching funding opportunities and assisting with the development of grant applications that advance our mission and programs. This role may include drafting narratives, compiling supporting documents, coordinating with staff for data and budgets, and aligning proposals with funder priorities.

This position is primarily volunteer-based; however, a paid stipend may be available upon successful grant awards, contingent on the grant type, funder guidelines, and allowable costs. This role is well-suited for individuals with grant writing experience—or those building experience—who are detail-oriented, collaborative, and motivated to help sustain community-centered, trauma-informed services.

Weekend Meal Volunteers support the drop-in center by preparing food at home and bringing it in to share with community members on Saturdays and Sundays. This role helps ensure guests have access to warm, nourishing meals in a welcoming and dignified setting. Volunteers may cook simple comfort foods or culturally meaningful dishes, following basic food safety guidelines.

Donated meals are strongly preferred whenever possible. However, if purchasing ingredients presents a barrier, reasonable food expenses may be reimbursed with prior coordination. This role is well-suited for individuals who enjoy cooking, care about food access and community care, and want to contribute in a flexible, behind-the-scenes way that makes a direct and meaningful impact.

Drop-In Center Attendants help create a welcoming, safe, and respectful environment for community members accessing the drop-in space. Volunteers greet guests, offer basic assistance, help maintain the shared space, and support a calm, trauma-informed atmosphere grounded in dignity and mutual respect. This role is ideal for individuals who are reliable, compassionate, and comfortable interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, including those experiencing housing instability, mental health challenges, or substance use concerns. No clinical experience is required—just a willingness to listen, set healthy boundaries, and help ensure the space remains supportive and inclusive for everyone.

Street Outreach activities are designed to meet the immediate needs of people experiencing homelessness in unsheltered locations by connecting them with emergency shelter, housing, or critical services, and providing them with urgent, non-facility-based care.

About The Choose Your Own Pantry:

The Choose Your Own pantry is located in Silver City and is structured like a “grocery store” that allows community members to select the foods that are relevant to their lifestyle, dietary needs, and cultural preferences, while providing more dignity and a social activity to engage in community. This pantry can take place of any of the mobile drive-thru pantries and is open to all of Grant County!

Help restock the Choose Your Own Pantry with more food items! This work includes lots of lifting, carrying, loading, etc.

The store floater stocks priced items on the sales floor, creates eye catching displays, organizes & tidies items on the sales floor, greets customers, answers customer questions, and other duties as assigned. 

A volunteer application is required. You can pick one up at the cash registers Wednesday - Saturday, between 10am and 2pm.

We are looking for individuals to help keep the store and stock room clean. Duties include dusting, vacuuming, mopping, sanitizing and general cleaning needs.

Visit our Senior Food Pantry on the 3rd Thursday of each month for seniors 60+. It's not just about food but a place for connection, friendship, and community support. Join us behind the Mission on Texas Street to give or receive. Together, we nourish souls and share hope.

Provide Social Media Management.  To promote and sells tickets by managing all aspects of the theatre’s publicity and advertising material which includes fliers, posters, press adverts, brochures, newsletters, websites and social media. They oversee the content, design, production and distribution of this material. including press and public relations.

Literacy Link Leamos is seeking members of our community to join our board. Our mission is to raise literacy levels in Grant County through free tutoring and outreach. SCCT's Volunteer Board of Directors invites parties with experience in fundraising to join our board. Currently two open positions.

Our volunteers are a vital part of our Hospice team.  They provided needed respite, support, and comfort to patients and their families and caregivers.  We appreciate any and all time that our volunteers can give.  There is no set requirement of hours per day, week or month.  Volunteers do not provide any direct patient care.  You may choose to sit with a patient that can still communicate or not.  Many volunteers like to read, sit/walk outdoors, or play music with their patients. Some may like to just sit quietly and hold a hand.  The choice is totally up to you.  

*Since our volunteers go into patient homes and are part of our hospice team, Medicare guidelines require a drug test, background check and TB test which is scheduled and paid for by Ambercare. 

Fill out a tutor intake form here in our office, or take it with you. You will need to sign a background check form in front of a notary then bring the form back to us and we will pay the fee for the background check.

We are looking for people who are kind, patient, and natural teachers to help adults with English as a Second Language, Basic Literacy, High School Equivalency exam prep, Citizenship exam prep, Digital Literacy Skills, and Financial Planning Skills.

Some tutor trainings are available for Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language. Tutors will have access to a wealth of Professional Learning & Support resources at their fingertips, such as, PropelNM, ProLiteracy, New Readers Press, and NMAEA (New Mexico Adult Education Association) online tools.

The Silver City Watershed Keepers (SCWK) Adopt-A-Stream Program empowers citizens to steward our waterways by monitoring environmental quality of streams, cleaning up litter, and restoring riparian areas. By becoming a stream steward and adopting a stream, you can help identify problems so that we can keep our waterways clean and healthy.

How does the program work?
Stream stewards make a one-year commitment to 1) make quarterly observations of their adopted stream segment over the course of the year using the Silver City Watershed Keepers Reporter app and 2) clean up litter two (2) times per year OR volunteer on restoration/beautification project OR participate in quarterly water quality monitoring. Stream stewards can renew their commitment every year.

Who can become a stream steward?
We encourage individuals, service organizations, businesses, scout troops, church and neighborhood groups, and schools to participate in the program. Children under 18 can participate if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Are participants compensated?
Stream stewards are volunteers and are not paid. However, you will receive an Adopt-A-Stream t-shirt, training in stream monitoring, stewardship and restoration, and recognition in Adopt-A-Stream program materials. Most importantly, you will feel the personal satisfaction of doing your part to keep our waterways healthy and community clean.
